Leather types that Dutch'D uses

Posted by Roel Linders on

Are you curious about how Dutch'D got started and what the brand’s vision is?

One of the most commonly used materials in shoes is leather. The material is generally very durable and naturally follows the shape of the foot quite well. Leather shoes are very comfortable, and because leather can take a beating, they are very durable. The disadvantage of leather shoes is usually that they need to be broken in. Of course, you may be wondering what the difference is between all the types of leather you’ll find at Dutch’D! Read on below!

Nappa leather
A frequently used type of leather that you will see in many branches. There’s a good reason for that! Nappa is very sturdy and durable, and it’s also easy to keep clean. This is because nappa leather is dyed all the way through. With some types, you can still see the natural grain of the hide, but there are also sanded nappa leathers that are completely smooth. There are harder (full-grain) nappa types and so-called soft nappa leather. The harder nappa leather has the advantage that it can really take a beating. You often see it used in furniture and bags. The disadvantage is that a shoe creaks more easily or is less comfortable. Soft nappa has the advantage of quickly taking on the shape of your feet, which is of course very pleasant. In addition, the leather doesn’t crack when you walk. The disadvantage is that a sharp object can damage the leather more easily. Of course, a good protective product can offer extra protection to prevent this.

Suede
Most leather is smooth and water-resistant. This is because the outer side of the leather is used, as is the case with nappa leather. With suede, it’s exactly the other way around. The leather feels very soft and usually has a matte appearance. Suede has a hairy texture that is carefully brushed at the tannery. Good-quality suede has a nice nap and is supple. Suede looks premium, but the disadvantage is that it gets dirty more quickly. This is due to its coarse texture; moisture can also penetrate quickly if it is untreated. Therefore, always make sure to treat it with the right products.

Nubuck
You see this type of leather more and more, and for good reason. Nubuck looks very exclusive and, let’s face it, that’s what everyone wants, right? The advantage over suede is that nubuck is smoother and easier to wipe clean. However, nubuck also absorbs moisture quickly. If left untreated, nubuck leather can quickly lose its beautiful appearance. Make sure you always treat nubuck shoes properly or avoid wearing them in rainy weather. With a water-repellent protection spray, the shoe can of course withstand the rain.

TIP!
Most people find it very annoying when a leather shoe develops the familiar creases after a while. This can make a shoe look old quickly, even when it is not that old. To prevent this, you could put the shoe on a shoe tree every now and then.
